Distillation

Distillation on Last Resort is used for more than making alcohol.

With the right equipment and ingredients, the same system can be used for water treatment, preservation, medical supplies and other useful products.

The exact process depends on what you are trying to make.

Getting Started

Setup

Build the barrel

Requires
8 × Metal Sheets
A powered, non-ruined Blowtorch
Process
Use the Blowtorch on the Metal Sheets and select Craft Distillation Barrel. Construction takes about 15 seconds.
Result
Distillation Barrel

Setup

Fit the components

Requires
Portable Gas Stove with a fueled Gas Canister
Bunsen Stand
Infrastructure Pipe
Volume Beaker
Cooking Pot or Cauldron
Process
Attach every component to the Distillation Barrel. The Beaker is the input and the Pot or Cauldron is the collector.
Result
A complete distillery ready to load.

Operation

Load and run

Requires
A supported source liquid in the Volume Beaker and an empty collector, or one already holding the exact same output with enough free capacity.
Process
Turn on the distillery. Processing starts after the Beaker reaches operating heat.
Feedback
Watch the Stove’s working state and the changing Beaker and collector quantities. There is no separate progress bar.
Yield
The collector receives 25% of the input. A full 500 ml Beaker takes about 100 seconds after reaching operating heat and produces 125 ml.
Notes
The Stove remains on when a batch finishes. Turn it off to avoid wasting fuel. After a server restart, the distillery must be turned on again.

Water & Salt

Barrel process

Distilled Water

Requires
Ordinary Water in the Volume Beaker
Empty Pot or Cauldron
Process
Run the complete distillery at operating heat.
Result
Distilled Water in the collector at 25% of the input volume.

Barrel process

Distilled Water & Sea Salt

Requires
Salt Water in the Volume Beaker
Empty Pot or Cauldron
Process
Run the complete distillery at operating heat.
Result
Distilled Water in the collector and Sea Salt left in the Beaker. Each is produced at 25% of the input volume.
Notes
Remove the Sea Salt from the Beaker before starting a different batch.

Food & Preservation

These are supporting container processes in the distillation chain. They are mixed or fermented in containers rather than run through the barrel.

Container craft

Brine

Requires
Clean Water
Sea Salt or Table Salt
Process
Combine the salt with the water and select Craft Brine.
Result
Brine

Container process

Vinegar

Requires
Hard Cider
70 units of Yeast Powder
A cargo-capable liquid container
Process
Add the Yeast Powder to the container and allow the Hard Cider to ferment again for 5 minutes.
Result
Vinegar

Container craft

Pickling Vinegar

Requires
1 part Brine
2 parts Vinegar
A container with enough free capacity
Process
Combine the Brine and Vinegar and select Craft Pickling Vinegar.
Result
Pickling Vinegar
Notes
The ratio is measured by volume.

Alcohol

Input preparation

Fermented Potatoes

Requires
Mashed Potatoes
70 units of Yeast Powder
A cargo-capable liquid container
Process
Add the Yeast Powder and allow the mixture to ferment for 5 minutes.
Result
Fermented Potatoes ready for distillation.

Barrel process

Vodka

Requires
Fermented Potatoes in the Volume Beaker
Empty Pot or Cauldron
Process
Run the complete distillery at operating heat.
Result
Vodka in the collector at 25% of the input volume.
Notes
Vodka is consumable alcohol and can also be used in supported disinfectant and tincture processes.

Input preparation

Hard Cider

Requires
Supported Fresh Fruit, Apple, Pear or Plum Cider
70 units of Yeast Powder
A cargo-capable liquid container
Process
Add the Yeast Powder and allow the cider to ferment for 5 minutes.
Result
Hard Cider ready for distillation or further fermentation.
Notes
See Cooking Recipes for the food-preparation side of the process.

Barrel process

Ethanol

Requires
Supported Hard Cider in the Volume Beaker
Empty Pot or Cauldron
Process
Run the complete distillery at operating heat.
Result
Ethanol in the collector at 25% of the input volume.
Notes
Ethanol is a technical alcohol used for disinfecting and tinctures. It can also fuel vehicles and generators.

Medical

Medical supplies are follow-on crafts made from distillery products. They are not run through the barrel themselves.

Container craft

Disinfectant

Requires
Distilled Water
Ethanol or Vodka
A container with enough free capacity
Process
Hold the Distilled Water, use it on the container of Ethanol or Vodka, and select Craft Disinfectant.
Result
Disinfectant at approximately 70% alcohol and 30% Distilled Water.

Container craft

Saline

Requires
Distilled Water
Sea Salt or Table Salt
Process
Combine the salt with the Distilled Water and select Craft Saline.
Result
Saline

Medical assembly

Saline IV

Requires
Saline
Syringe
Reusable PVC Bag
IV Start Kit
Process
Use the Syringe to transfer Saline into the PVC Bag, then combine the filled bag with the IV Start Kit.
Result
Saline IV
Notes
Detaching the IV returns the PVC Bag. The IV Start Kit is consumed.

Chemistry

Tinctures are prepared in a liquid container. The corresponding Extract is then produced in the Distillation Barrel.

Input preparation

Tincture

Requires
  • A cargo-capable container holding enough Ethanol or Vodka
  • One ingredient type: Apple, Pear, Plum, Elderberry, Psilocybe Mushroom, Amanita Mushroom or Cannabis
Process
  • Add one type of non-rotten, non-ruined ingredient to the alcohol and allow it to process for 5 minutes.
Result
The alcohol becomes the corresponding Tincture. The solid ingredients finish ruined.
Notes
Do not mix ingredient types in the same batch.

Barrel process

Extract

Requires
  • Tincture in the Volume Beaker
  • Empty Pot or Cauldron
Process
  • Run the complete distillery at operating heat.
Result
The matching Extract in the collector at 25% of the input volume.
Notes
Do not mix ingredient types in the same batch.
Supported
Apple, Pear, Plum, Elderberry, Psilocybe, Amanita and Cannabis Tinctures.
